After I finished work in India, a friend and I traveled through Southeast Asia for some rest and sightseeing. We were able to cover a lot of ground in a short time, visiting Singapore, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand in just over a month. This first set of photos is from Singapore, Hong Kong and Guilin. Landing in Singapore, a city known for being so clean that you can get arrested for spitting, was quite a shock after 13 months in Delhi, where trash piles line the streets. I was also happy to make it to Guilin, a city in Guangxi province famous for it's unique limestone mountains (called karsts). You could spend a lifetime spending any one of these places, but here's what I was able to capture during my short visits.

The World Health Organization recently ranked Delhi's air as the most polluted in the world, worse even than Beijing's. The pollution comes from a number of sources: the dusty environment, hoards of cars and trucks, waste burning, coal-fired power plants within the city, and brick kilns on the outskirts (see this infographic for a more detailed breakdown). Delhi's air becomes especially nasty in the winter, when there is little wind to push fresh air into the city and a large number of the city's inhabitants resort to burning trash and biomass to stay warm.

In Beijing, air pollution is thought to reduce life expectancy by 5.5 years. In Delhi, where PM2.5 levels (a measure of the smallest, most harmful air pollutants) were 45% higher than Beijing last year, the effect could be much more severe. Making matters worse, there is little public knowledge of or concern about the air quality in Delhi. In Beijing, nearly everyone will wear face masks when the air turns bad. In Delhi, most people aren't even thinking about air pollution, and it is exceedingly rare to see anybody wearing a face mask. This will change, I hope, but for the time being, Delhi's air pollution is a public health catastrophe that is unfolding largely unnoticed by the 20 million people in the region.
Men in Ghaziabad's Sahibabad Industrial Area crowd around a small fire to stay warm in the winter. Waste burning accounts for 27.5% of PM2.5 emissions in Delhi, but for many it is a cheap and necessary source of heat in the winter.

The quality of this photo isn't great because I took it on my phone at night, but it will give you a sense of the scale of trash burning in Delhi. This is a large trash fire outside of my office in the Sahibabad Industrial Area, Ghaziabad. Trash fires like this were extremely common in winter because people needed to stay warm, but also in other times of the year because the municipal trash collection systems in the area seemed to be completely broken, if they exist at all.

When I first got off at the Sikanderpur metro stop in Gurgoan, I was greeted with a sweeping view of the surrounding area. “Gurgoan was supposed to show off the New India, but they forgot to remove all this,” a friend told me, gesturing to the shantytown and trash piles lined up next to the metro station. Of course, there’s plenty of New India in Gurgoan, too. Just behind the shantytown, Gurgoan’s “Mall Mile” stretched into the distance, filled with cafes, designer clothing stores, and hip restaurants. The rest of the night would further reinforce my friend’s observation: we took an auto rickshaw to a microbrewery in an ultra-modern glass building that also housed a Mercedes Benz dealership, but the road in front of the building was half asphalt, half dirt and was pitch dark because there was no street lighting. Inside the bar, we were greeted with IPAs and Miley Cyrus at full volume.

Situated south of Delhi in the state of Haryana, Gurgoan sprouted up from farmland, and over the past 25 years the city has grown into a commercial center for Northern India. Today, half of all Fortune 500 companies have a presence in Gurgoan – drawing many middle and upper class professionals to the city. Gurgoan’s quick rise is attributed to a combination of cheap land, lax development regulations, and its proximity to Delhi. Much of the private land in Gurgoan was developed by DLF Limited, one of India’s largest private real estate developers, and it can sometimes feel like the company owns the entire city. A Gurgoan resident could easily live in DLF Phase IV (a residential colony), work in DLF’s Cyber City (an office complex, pictured below), and go out for dinner in DLF’s Grand Mall (or, alternatively, DLF’s Cyber Hub, which is attached to Cyber City).

Private development transformed Gurgoan into the economic powerhouse that it is today, but it has also resulted in a city with practically no public infrastructure. Gurgoan is plagued by poor roads, insufficient waste disposal systems, weak power infrastructure, and a government that is struggling to fix it all. Inside a gated community or mall in Gurgoan, it is easy to forget that you are in a country where nearly 60% of the population lives under $3.10 PPP a day - but step into a public space and you are immediately back in India. Cambridge economist Amartya Sen warned that India is at risk of becoming, “half California, half Sub-Saharan Africa,” and this dynamic is abundantly clear in Gurgoan. These photos hope to show some of the perplexing scenes that one encounters on a daily basis in Gurgoan, with special focus given to the surreal transitions between the city’s public and private spaces.

(If you’d like to read a more comprehensive description of Gurgoan’s development and the problems it faces today, I would highly recommend this New York Times article.)

The highlight of my trip to Ladakh was a visit to Pangong Lake. Situated 4,350 meters above sea level and measuring 134 km long, the lake crosses a much-disputed section of the Indo-Chinese border. To get to the lake requires a special border permit and a harrowing six-hour drive from Leh. The first half of the week, the road to the lake was closed because heavy rains had caused landslides. Even once the road was open it was a terrifying drive, mostly because there was no guard rail to keep cars from sliding off the unpaved, narrow, and windy road. As someone who gets carsick easily and absolutely hates driving alongside cliffs, it wasn't the best six hours of my life.

The gorgeous lake made the drive worth it though. The crystal clear water mirrored the amazing hues in the sky, and combined with the enormous barren mountains rising out of the shore it made for a pretty spectacular place for photography. At night, the clear skies turned into a starscape, with the clearest view of the Milky Way I’ve ever seen. Since we were in a shared van we could only stay one night, but I could easily spend a month photographing the lake and hiking around the area. If you're in Ladakh, Pangong Lake is a must-see.

In August, I had the chance to visit Ladakh, a part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir situated high in the Himalayas along the Indo-Chinese border. I can confidently say that Ladakh is the most beautiful place I have ever visited. At 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) high, the barren landscape and deep blue skies were like nothing I’ve seen before. Driving around the area was a treat, and I spent most of the time on the road hanging out of the car window camera in hand trying to capture the passing landscape. There was no shortage of monasteries and pretty valleys to visit, many of which are pictured below. The highlight of the trip was a visit to Pangong Lake, which will have an entire post dedicated to it.

A friend and I visited Nepal for five days at the end of March, almost exactly a month before the devastating earthquake hit. We had a great time traveling through the Kathmandu valley region, including Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Namobuddha temple. The highlight of the trip was seeing the well-preserved historical sites in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu, many of which have now been heavily damaged by the earthquake. I didn't take as many photos of these historical sites as I would have liked to, but I've included one of the best shots of Bhaktapur's Durbar Square below. I'm not sure how the earthquake has affected the people in these photos, but even if they weren't directly hurt by the earthquake, life will be very difficult for them while Nepal rebuilds after this disaster. I'm hoping for a speedy recovery.

In early February, my team and I visited the state of Bihar to conduct a field survey for two village we are hoping to electrify. The trip brought us to the state capital Patna, Gaya district, and Purnea district as we visited the villages, evaluated community outreach partners, and saw existing off-grid solar projects on the ground. Given Bihar's reputation as a lawless and underdeveloped state, we were happy to complete the trip without being kidnapped by Naxalites - the Maoist insurgents active in the area. In retrospect, we were pleasantly surprised that state was nearly not as defunct popular lore led us to believe (although we did have to spend a night in the Patna train station after one of our trains was delayed by eight hours).

That being said, much of the state still lives in poverty: it is humbling to visit villages without access to the electrical grid and where the value of the camera around my neck could easily be more than a household's annual income. The upside of the trip was that we were able to see solar starting to spread to off-grid areas through local NGOs, startups, and module distributers. These photos don't show much solar, mostly because I don't find solar panels or LED lights to be terribly visually compelling, but hopefully off-grid electricity access can be the topic of a future photo essay. In the mean time, here are some scenes from my travels. Enjoy!

In early December, my team and I visited Dhankya, a village about 30 minutes outside of Jaipur in Rajasthan. Dhankya has been selected as a model village under Prime Minister Modi's Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana program, which requires every member of parliament to adopt a village and coordinate development efforts to make it a model village by 2016. My team is working on providing solar power to households and community buildings to supplement electricity from the erratic national grid.

I suspect Dhankya is representative of a number of villages in India - places where residents are close enough to city centers to have access to urban amenities and service sector jobs but where agriculture is still the primary economic activity. Compared to other villages in India, Dhankya is relatively well-off, enjoying good road connection to Jaipur and literacy rates higher than average for Rajasthan. However, the village still faces a number of serious issues like underfunded public schools (science isn't taught at the secondary school level), a rapidly falling water table, and poor sanitation practices. Through the course of our field visit I photographed many residents of the village, giving a look at some of the faces of semi-rural India. Enjoy!
I've uploaded more photos taken during my wanderings around Delhi. There's not much of a unifying theme here, but I think this set does a nice job at demonstrating the huge diversity of people and places that Delhi houses. Between trash-filled streets in Ghaziabad, cramped alleys in Old Delhi, and high-end shopping malls in Vasant Kunj, traveling through Delhi can feel like shifting between vastly different worlds. Hope you enjoy!

I don't usually shoot a lot of video, but I've been recently getting in the habit of recording short clips from my day-to-day life. This clip was taken during my commute home one day through the Sahibabad Industrial Area in Ghaziabad. My coworker and I got into a rickshaw with a flashing green LED and huge stereo blasting music in the background. Add in a driver hidden behind a hood and it made for a surreal commute.
The clean air and mountain scenery was a welcome escape from Delhi. Of course, the drive from Delhi was delayed buy a few hours by a massive traffic jam (pictured below) caused by an ultra slow toll collector, but Dharamshala was well worth the wait.

I've moved to Delhi as part of the International Innovation Corps, a yearlong fellowship that places American and Indian young professionals into Indian public sector institutions to work on scalable solutions to social problems. I'm working with Central Electronics Limited, a state-owned solar manufacturer and the first domestic manufacturer of solar cells and module in India. My team is focusing on building a rural electrification program with an emphasis on smart solar microgrids. I've been here Since mid-July, but between finding an apartment, getting over the culture shock, and settling in at work I haven't had time to post photos. The photos below are from around Delhi, a visit to the Taj Mahal, and a field visit to Rajasthan I made for my work.

The University of Chicago is known for its ivy-lined buildings and gothic architecture, but next to the University's iconic quads lies an expanse of glassy modern buildings. From the University of Chicago hospital to Manuseto library, the newly-developed areas surrounding the quads stand in stark contrast to the center of campus. These photos portray the lesser-seen side of the University of Chicago campus, where glass and steel replace ivy and gargoyles. Enjoy!

I published a short photo essay in the Chicago Maroon about the demolition of the graffiti wall on 53rd Street in Hyde Park. The wall was one of the few places in Chicago where graffiti artists could paint without being hassled by neighbors or the police, but it was demolished in March to make way for a new apartment development. Click here to see the full photo essay.Jamie Manley (金汉生)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01233228504983912549noreply@blogger.com0
